Best All-Terrain Tires For Winter Use

Get the best out of your tire this winter without sacrificing trail capability year-round.

While an all-terrain tire is not a substitute for a dedicated snow tire, there are many AT (all-terrain) tires that can still be used in the snow. Many people want a tire they can depend on during all months of the year without having to buy and store a second set of wheels and tires. A good all-terrain tire can accomplish this very well and there are some available that fit popular sizes with lifted Subaru owners.

When searching for a year round all-terrain tire option, one of the most important things you want to look for is the “3 Peak Mountain Snowflake” rating. The 3PMSF rating for tires is important for drivers, particularly in regions with harsh winter conditions. This rating signifies that a tire has been rigorously tested and proven to perform exceptionally well in snowy and icy conditions. You’ll usually find this symbol molded into the sidewall of the tire. But the 3PMSF rating is not just a symbol; it represents the ability of the tire to retain its grip when temperatures drop. Investing in tires with this rating is a prudent choice for anyone concerned about winter driving safety and that’s why each tire on this list meet those standards.

We’ve asked our friends for their experience using tires in snow and tested multiple tires of our own to compile this list of all-terrain tires that we think are the absolute best options available.

Best All-Terrain Tires For The Snow:

Our pick for best all-around offroad tire with good snow performance

The Wildpeak wins our top pick for being aggressive, lightweight, and 3 Mountain Peak Snowflake rated. This tire has become a favorite among lifted Subaru owners since it delivers great performance without weighing down the drivetrain. It is an offroad tire first and foremost. But it provides unbeatable performance in all areas.

We highly recommend it to anyone who wants a versatile tire without spending a ton of money.

Aggressive Tire With Good Snow Performance

Before the AT3 came out, I had the Open Country AT2 and LOVED them. The styling is great and they are 3MPSF rated for exceptional winter capability. The sidewall design on the AT3 looks fantastic in my opinion. It also adds extra grip in deep snow and provides protection against sidewall punctures. In fact, I was out on a trail run and got tangled up in some sharp rocks that cut into the sidewall. Thankfully the strong reinforcement kept it from doing anything other than removing some small chunks without breaching the sidewall. We can only imagine how much better the AT3 will be, and can’t wait to get a set!

Best Value For All Terrain Upgrade For Stock Wheel Sizes

The Pirelli Scorpions have been gaining popularity among Subaru owners who want a tire that is dependable and close to stock size. For those of us running a 15 inch wheel, the Scorpion won’t fit our applications. But for anyone wanting to stick to their 17″ factory wheel, this is a fantastic option! They’re 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter conditions. They’ll get you to the trailhead regardless of the season.

Who should look into this tire: Those who do occasional off-road driving, hikers, campers, skiers & snowboarders.

Highlights: Great price, lightweight, stock sizes available, good sidewall design.
